For its inaugural visit to Bread & Butter, Diesel was always going to make a statement. Impressive though the stand clearly is, with its pop-art theme, soup kitchen deli and thumping bass-heavy soundtrack, the Italian denim brand's appearance served largely to confirm how safe and commercially-led the collection is.
Chunky knitwear was a key theme with double breasted cardigans for men appearing alongside jumper dresses, heavy rope-patterned looks and patch-laden military-inspired styles for women. This military theme extended to an olive story which counted cotton parka coats among its numbers.
With the exception of its wing-collared chambray evening shirt for men and women's boiler suit, the denim on offer underwhelmed, and while other brands at B&B experimented with darted anatomical shapes, aggressively tapered silhouettes and handworked DIY details, Diesel backed a monotonous mantra of straight legged men's styles and skinny shapes for women having taken out directional styles such as the Irjun from the collection. Working from an almost exclusively stonewashed palette, abrasions and zip details only just helped to inject some surface interest.
Better was the brand's small story of mini-dresses which included one particular highlight in the guise of a flapper inspired style brought bang up to date with its combination of futuristic panelling, layered ruffles and diaganol zips.
