Fashion Buyer was lucky enough this week to enjoy the company of Chris Gilbert. Formerly a trends analyst at the Doneger Group, Gilbert is now the creative muscle behind Fashion Edit and still doing an impressive job of hacking through a breathtaking volume of catwalks to sift out the key womenswear trends for the coming season.
That was exactly what the New Yorker was doing in London this week, presenting his findings to wave after wave of ravenous high street designers all looking for a steer or maybe just confirmation of their autumn 10 looks.
Here we bring you our take on Gilbert’s trends. The obvious inference is that the designers lapping up this information will incorporate it into their collections. For savvy buyers it’s all about deciding if you want to buy into these trends, mirror them at a more relevant price point or differentiate your offer from these. Today, we’re giving you a quick overview but come back for a breakdown of the key trend stories over the next few days.
Silhouettes: Elliptical, bell, dirndl and trapeze skirt shapes line up alongside raised waists and A-lines. The hourglass is the most significant. Hemlines plunge as the 50s flavour intensifies. Pleats and ruffles are still in the mix and wrapping and draping are still in the mix.
Palette: Red is the key colour, alongside camel, both of which inject a luxe feel. Army green, says Gilbert, looks surprisingly good and is everywhere. Dark jewel tones and a few shock brights diversify the message, with a few soft shades and nudes add a faded romanticism.
