Texture-rich and in a somewhat-menacing palette of natural shades, olives, midnight navy and anthracite, Topman’s autumn 10 storyboard has a thrift store feel, mixing army surplus with aged tweeds and outdoorsy layers. A misfit gang of rocker, equestrian and military themes are dealt with sincerely and US looks remain key with varsity jackets and intarsia knits still replying to the register with a loud “here sir!” So too does the sheepskin coat – set to be a big item this autumn – as well the soft jersey jogger. But the real message from Topman’s parade was that detail is king on menswear now.
