New York Fashion Week: Marc Jacobs goes back to disco

Florence Welch may or may not have been the influence for Marc Jacobs’ spring 11 runway show in New York, but the flowing chiffons, maxi dress swirls and lame sections were every inch the Rabbit Heart singer’s signature. The real theme, as countless fashion hacks have trotted out already, was all about the 70s. Cue Jerry Hall, Studio 54 and Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver references by the bucketload. And how apt they are – floppy sun hats and flowing maxis came in sunset shades as LA pool parties beckoned for Jacob’s glamour-puss models. But that wasn’t all. There were also structured summer coats, metallic gold hot pants, exaggerated shoulders and boho gypsy sleeves. Trousers in super light and sheer fabrications took womenswear’s current hot item and pushed the envelope further yet and these desert dwelling super loose and cool pants could easily be really commercial items next summer.
