The Fashion Buyer team met so many buyers on our expedition of the AW11 shows, all claiming to be on the hunt for something new. Imagine our surprise then to discover one of the hottest gems of the season not hidden down a faceless exhibition aisle on foreign shores but casually strolling down a London street.
It was the sight of a stranger's exquisitely tailored canvas duster coat with its function-rich military/hunting details which instantly persuaded this inquisitive hack to tap this sartorially-splendid fella on the shoulder to enquire about the coat's provenance. The wearer in question introduced himself as Gary Craughwell and the coat, along with the rest of his dapper outfit, were components of the autumn '11 collection from Volklore, the brand which he and designer Sam Giles launched a year previously.
For reference, think vintage military silhouettes treated to a nip here, a tuck there and peppered with a few added details to bring these shapes bang up to date. Pleated twill chino pants sit alongside yarn-dyed shirts inspired by the construction of parachutes, hunting-inspired blazers and a full-length coat with a detachable hood-cum-cap which would have made even the late Massimo Osti sit up and take notes.
Any buyer looking to introduce a little home-grown icing to their Cabourn/Folk/YMC/Haversack merchandise mix would do well to take a monocle to Volklore.
Wholesale prices range from £24 for T-shirts to £150 for outerwear.
