Pitti Uomo SS11 trends: Classic Preppy

The aisles of the Padiglione Centrale were lined with modern and commercial interpretations of the laid-back East Coast preppy aesthetic. This look is characterised by a multitude of prep-tastic details and an overarching use of optimistic and bold colours.
Taking their lead from Ralph Lauren's repeat polo player emblem on trousers and shorts a number of brands put their own spin on the look by using house symbols or nautically inspired references. Pictured above: Brooks Brothers.
Spring 2011's flamboyant exhibition of colour is exemplified perfectly by the broad use of colour-rich Madras checks. From patchwork shorts to flat patterns, the use of Madras breathes new life into the flagging checks trend. Pictured above: Burlington.
The ultimate casual symbol of the preppy trend, long-sleeved polo shirts with sash details and applique patches were out in force at Pitti Uomo. This look has plenty of mileage left so long as the styles are colourful and detail rich. Pictured above: Hackett.
Monogrammed blazers, many in loosely constructed silhouettes, provided an easy opportunity to dress-up the otherwise casual preppy trend. Working largely from a classic blue background these styles featured taped seams, crested pockets, and fancy buttons.
