Spring 10 Thrift Store Chic from Miss Selfridge

Miss Selfridge shone out as the jewel in Arcadia’s crown at its recent spring 10 collection preview. While stablemate Topshop appeared slightly at a loss as to which of the season’s countless trends to back, Miss Selfridge brand manager Yasmin Yusef exerted a clear thrift store vision for her young fashion customers.

Antique-inspired Victoriana styles and gothic cabaret looks vyed for attention alongside sophisticated nude tones and Desperately Seeking Susan-derived 1980s casualwear.

A soft peach and nude palette, used as the backdrop for flirty sequin-embellished 1920s flapper styles, was juxtaposed against bright and oversized 1980s florals, spots and quirky embellishments. The 1980s theme was underlined by cute layered ra-ra skirts, strappy fit-and-flare floral mini-dresses and skirts puffled up with layers of tulle. The spots theme continued elsewhere via large spots on a black lace dress, and the florals trend so evident at Miss Selfridge was continued via a floral jumpsuit.

Set exclusively against a black backdrop, a vintage cabaret story was exemplified perfectly through a stunning shawl-collared halterneck playsuit with tuxedo details. This mannish eveningwear theme was also explored via a cropped double-breasted jacket with chain attachments.

Diverse enough to keep shoppers thrilled through spring, and sophisticated enough to set a new trend-led benchmark for the brand this was Miss Selfridge’s most accomplished presentation in many seasons.
