Debenhams rediscovers young fashion with Henry Holland tie-up

High street department store Debenhams scores a coup for spring 10 with the signing of Henry Holland to its Designers at Debenhams roster.
Debenhams has until now lacked a designer name with enough street-savvy clout to attract a younger 16-25 year-old shopper. The H! By Henry Holland, sub-brand addresses the issue with plenty of wit and energy. Though perhaps less academic a designer as London Fashion Week peers such as Giles Deacon, who also contributes to the high street via New Look, Holland’s streetwear handwriting is more accurately pitched at the country’s young fashion shoppers.
The first H! By Henry Holland range will not disappoint fans, crammed as it is with instantly identifiable interpretations of statement pieces from Holland’s LFW catwalk collections.
As you might expect the entire collection is informed by 1980s thrift store looks underpinned by a cocky rock’n’roll swagger. Colour-saturated floral prints are used on grey jersey leggings, black leather hot-pants have zip details on pockets and there’s an excellent offer of rock-print black T-shirts with either a studded ‘The Zips’ logo or ‘Pink’ logo in a gothic font with an oversized lipstick motif.
We are reminded of Holland’s fascination with glenchecks through an unstructured cotton suit in pink and the designer provides an almost obligatory cropped and stonewashed denim jacket with purple stud buttons. No Henry Holland offer would be complete without a cute Pretty In Pink-inspired zip-through dress, this time finishing above the knee with an all-over floral print. On-trend skinny motorcycle jeans with diamond-stitch knee pads and zipped hems are another highlight alongside a washed-out multi-pocket field jacket in grey with an eye-catching contrast lining in purple gingham, as well as his cropped denim baseball jacket with a purple, yellow and grey knitted collar.
Pricing is competitively in-line with the pocket-money budgets of H! By Henry Holland’s target customer ranging from £5 to £60, and the collection lands in-store in January.
Tomorrow, Fashion Buyer UK takes a closer look at the rest of the women’s collections from Designers at Debenhams.
