Jil Sander touches down at Pitti Uomo

The sun is blazing over London, I've consigned the winter knits to the loft, and Pitti Uomo is just three weeks away. It feels like summer has arrived.
The next edition of Pitti, which every six months marks the unofficial start of the new buying season, looks set to be a firecracker. For a start the Florentine show has invited modernist master Raf Simons to present his spring menswear 2011 collection for Jil Sander (pictured below) at an outdoor catwalk-led presentation on Thursday 17 June, set against the opulent backdrop of one of Tuscany's most exquisite former residences, Villa Gamberaia.

In recent seasons, Pitti Uomo has themed each exhibition with an often irreverent and generally avant-garde artistic presence informing many of the show's components. This June the theme is 'Design Watching', which according to the organisers promises to deliver "a curious and indiscreet foray into the world of design through the ideas and visual, acoustic, and verbal notes gathered by a platoon of Pitti design watchers." What that means exactly is as curious as Pitti's planned foray into the world of design, but I'm certain all will become clearer once we arrive.
Other things worth mentioning is a fresh exhibition statement from function-led sportswear expert CP Company, a return to the show from G-Star, a Made in the USA presentation by Levi's Vintage Clothing, and a preview of Neil Barrett's collection for Sundek. It's enough to make you wonder whether Pitti is reclaiming its authority in premium denim and sportswear.

Over in the Pitti W_Woman arena the guest designer is the uber-directional sports-luxe supremo Haider Ackermann (pictured above), who is developing an abstract performance on Wednesday 16 June at the Palazzo Corsini. Visitors making the trip for the womenswear section of Pitti would be well advised to find time for a saunter over to the Vintage for Pitti W area which returns for a second season. Produced in cooperation with A.N.G.E.L.O. Vintage Palace, the section is dedicated to the wonderfully-constructed, sometimes understated, and more often flamboyant world of Italian vintage fashion.
Let's hope the next three weeks fly-by because Fashion Buyer cannot wait to touch down at Pitti Uomo. See you at Gilli.Source URL: http://icip2idayusof.blogspot.com/2010/05/jil-sander-touches-down-at-pitti-uomo.html
