Bread and Butter trends: denim shirts and dresses

Double denim is still big news and khakis are continuing to gain ground. Add in the profusion of military-inspired olive shades and you have one heck of an opportunity to sell denim shirts. So it was unsurprising to find them still looking pivotal to the collections of denim and young fashion lifestyle brands alike. Both dark and light shades were on offer and a greater level of detail was used as brands sought to differentiate their offer. Though Anachronorm took the crown on that score.

While this is a unisex category it does naturally fall more in the male category. No matter though, for women the denim shirt dress is emerging. Hanging loose or – more often – softly belted it is developing a sort of prairie theme on womenswear

Bread and Butter denim report

Denim remains the motor which drives the Bread and Butter machine. And whatever else is going on at the show, the central denim hall continues to be anchored to jeans with the mammoth brands of streetwear from G-Star and Diesel to Replay, Pepe Jeans, Firetrap and Levi’s unveiling the details, washes and silhouettes for spring 11.

With worn-in washes getting lighter and archive driven repairs looking key, that’s where we’ll begin. After that we’ll look at a few more niche trends. Later, Fashion Buyer will post more denim looks as shirts and dresses in lightweight fabrics were also key at B&B.

Bread and Butter denim report: rip and repair

A massive trend. Machined and hand ripped distressing has been keeping denim creators busy in the run up to this show, with every significant brand getting far more aggressive with the detailing on their denim. Conspicuous repair details have then followed on from this destructive process, creating ripped-and-repaired looks that reference the archive denims which were only on the stands of Bread and Butter’s more niche denim players a year ago.

Bread and Butter denim report: lighter washes

A spectrum of washes has been on show at the last two editions of Bread and Butter but this time round there was more of a consensus on show as the general pitch of all denims lightened away from the raw looks that have dominated. It’s more about worn-down dyes than super light looks though, with whitened thighs, heavy moustache creases and frayed edges all pulling the blue down a shade or two.

Bread and Butter denim report: shorts

Arguably most denim shorts on punters are still cut-offs rolled at the knee for men or cut off above the pocket lining a la Kate Moss for women. Still, it has become such a significant category that, here in Berlin, brands backed the jeans shorts with gusto. Subtle distressing appeared here, just as with the full length jeans, on mid blue washes. For fellas, most of these knee length shorts were rolled once or twice.

Bread and Butter denim report: cinch backs

With heritage detailing taking its cue from workwear, cinch backs were used on jeans as well as elsewhere in the show on chinos and trousers.

Bread and Butter denim report: waistbands

Waistband detailing was a new area for detailing at the show, with brands inserting elasticated and drawstring waists on their denim. Mostly one for menswear, these super comfy styles have an eye on the younger generation, taking their cue from the sweats favoured by urban teens and mallrats. More mature and offering a luxe touch was the internal waistband, like the leather detail pictured here from G-Star.

Bread and Butter denim report: carrots and crotches

The directional silhouette for men continues to be the extreme tapering of the carrot leg silhouette, championed by G-star and Humor. Meanwhile in women’s denim, the influence of the harem pant was felt as brands from Killah to Diesel introduced drop crotch jeans. The lead mannequin on the Diesel picture above also shows off the cropped denim jacket - a key item in womenswear, not just to team with denim but already a summer seller wherever maxi dresses are on shopfloor.
