Pitti autumn 11 brand profile: Alexander Boyd

The very English brand Alexander Boyd has embraced a country gent look for autumn 11.
“But it’s not too eccentric,” warns sales manager Jason Roberts. “The idea is to be clear about the Englishness and then to make it easy to wear. It’s not about fancy dress.” To that end, the cable detailed cricket jumpers, penny round collared shirts, corduroy and moleskin trousers all come in easy to wear and muted colours.

A mix of blue, tan, green and cream is interspersed with washed out checks on shirts and the sorts of herringbone tweeds that proved popular across Pitti and which a heritage Anglo brand like Boyd has every right to make hay from. Not that it was all about nostalgic anglophilia, and in the guise of coated jackets, waxed blousons and washed waxed trench coats there was a technical edge to the ranges. And in its shawl collared cardigans in navy, green and burgundy the brand offered up a stand out piece.
Wholesale prices go from £25 for ties up to £350 for some of the outerwear. Knits come in at about £100.

Pitti brand profile: Alexander Boyd

After the Japanese and Californian artisans we've brought you in posts this week, it's a sincere pleasure to highlight one of the UK's own bastions of menswear. The rejuvenated Alexander Boyd is gaining traction in the menswear market and its detail rich, clean lined collection continues to throw up some of the season's sexier pieces. Checked dbs and waked jackets sit alongside textured knits and panel cut shirts for spring 11. Among Fashion Buyer's favourite wovens at Pitti last week was the one shown below. The subtle geometric front was contrasted with the colourful madras check you can see peeping though there - it's not a section of internal panelling but the entire back of the shirt, you know!

Alexander Boyd Presents First Tailoring Collection

Now in its second season, all-British contemporary formalwear brand Alexander Boyd extends its reach beyond detail-rich shirting to take in outerwear, soft tailoring and trousers.
A soft woollen semi-structured blazer in dark blue with a polka dot half-lining shares railspace with subtly tapered trousers cut slim. An impressive coat collection has long or short peacoats in puppytooth wools with storm collars and reinforced cuffs alongside form-fitting trench coats in black or tonic with traditional military-inspired features such as hanging belt loops. Shirts remain a particular strength for Alexander Boyd with this season's highlights including narrow collared styles in pin dots, herringbones, checks and plains. Eyecatching details include contrast fabrics on back panels, subtle contrast trims and exposed placket tabs (a feature originally designed to allow dress shirts to be attached to the waistband of trousers for a clean front-facing finish). Ties with 5cm wide blades are squared off at the narrow end, as are bow ties whcih for the second season remain a recurring theme throughout Pitti Uomo.
Fashion Buyer UK's favourite piece has to be the pull-on flannel shirt in a herringbone weave with a three-button placket.
