Moda menswear: trousers and chinos

Once upon a time the “slack” was at the core of Moda’s dustier offering. Redolent of fusty indies still toiling under the banner of gents’ outfitters, who would punt these out as casualwear, slacks were admittedly commercial but they were far from directional. Now though a whole variety of cotton twill trousers and – crucially – chinos look bang on trend. And with the Jack Wills generation getting seriously into colour, the bright trouser too looks far more relevant. Fashion Buyer’s pick of the shades is apple green – spotted on plenty of Euro men at Bread and Butter and again here at Moda. For the chinos, a punchier tobacco shade is eclipsing the khakis and stones. Dockers version here is a good example.

Moda menswear: grey tailoring

Business-first tailoring has taken a back seat across the menswear spectrum. Moda certainly represented that, with just a smattering of formalwear on show. The examples on parade were mostly grey, with checks and plains in the offering. The silhouette still looks slim and the majority of options on show were subtly inspired by eveningwear with cloth covered buttons and 1sb, tux-style jackets.

Moda menswear: checks

Checks still represent the core commercial shirt offering in UK menswear. Yes, washed down cottons, in striped and plain styles are looking fresher but it would be churlish to turn your backs – or you shopfloors – on a category that still has plenty of legs. Here at Moda there was once again plenty of variety from tiny checks with embroidered emblems layered on, to oversized versions and more traditional plaids. Moda menswear: denim shirts

The light blue glow on the menswear horizon is made out of cotton and cut into a shirt.
OK, so it’s not really news – you’ve all seen these wovens and the increasing rate at which brands have been rolling them into their collection. But it was good to see some at Moda Menswear, which has embraced the more contemporary end of the spectrum under the guidance of the affable Jamie Harden. On the whole, it was the more direction-hugging brands that displayed these pieces and check out the pocket buttoning detail on the Matinique shirt above. Moda Trends: Lace

Panels of poly lace and all-over treatments on cropped evening jackets and evening dresses rolled in a more modern Chanel influence for Autumn 10, but in this case the lace was less about romantic bohemia and more about adding interest to structured garments.
